Upright Piano Piano Decorating Ideas

  • amber wallace says

Holy smokes I needed this post! I love all these ideas especially the mirror above. Its a tricky space :)

  • Kirsti says

Love your examples of decorating around a piano! I'm a piano teacher and have been working on decorating my piano studio and these have been an inspiration to me. I was interested to see that none of the pianos you show have been painted–that seems to be a trend in the blogging world right now. My pianos are not painted but I wonder what you think about that. Is it just a trend?

    • Emily A. Clark says

I like the look of painted pianos, but since ours isn't going to be, I guess I was just focused on those that weren't. I think it's a fun look–you would just have to be really committed to the color. Seems like a big job to me!

Love this post! We had a piano growing up and I took lessons for about 5 years but all I can play is the intro to Lean on Me- I just didn't love it. My parents still have the piano and I am planning on taking it from them when we finally have space for it- can't wait to see who you style it

  • BundleBaby.etsy.com says

We have a beautiful old tall upright piano passed down from my family. Our old house has so many windows and doors that it was hard to find a good wall big enough to put it on without it being obtrusive. So it ended up in our dining room…lol. But it actually doesn't look that bad in there. I have high hopes that Charlie will be a pianist…Audrey Cate has no interest whatsoever so I fear she may already be a lost cause. :)

    Hey Emily!
We purchased a piano a few years ago and I did a post on my thoughts on placement. Thought I would share it with you. Ours is a baby grand and it was a challenge finding the perfect spot for it! Here's the post I did – hope it helps. Can't wait to see what you do with it!!! http://interiordesignmusings.blogspot.com/2011/03/thats-one-big-baby.html

Yeah for the future piano lessons. Good luck with the decorating. If anyone can make it look good, it's you.

  • Andrea V at {5 under 8} says

My piano top is way short so it is a challenge. I have a huge family canvas print over it.

LOVE having a piano in the home. We only have a keyboard right now but grammy and papa will be passing on theirs and I will be coming here to figure out the best way to style it! You'll be able to host recitals in your own home with five kiddos playing ;)

  • Yvonne @ StoneGable says

I'm sure you will love having a piano in your home, Emily! I just sold mine after 30 years of living with a piano!
You have some beautiful inspiration here in these images to decorate your new purchase! I can't wait to see how you decorate around it!

  • Heather says

I have a piano, given to us by my parents so my little Mozarts could have something to practice on. The frustrating thing about deciding where to put it is that I was always told a piano has to go on an inside wall, away from heat/air vents> I guess this is because they can warp/go out of tune due to the fluctuation of temperatures. I'm not sure if this is true or not, but it limited where I could put ours to one small space in the living room. It's okay there, just really affects how we put and use furniture in that room. Has anyone else heard that about where pianos need to be sited? I'm curious.

    • momma-lana says

I have never heard that is has to go on an inside wall. My tuner, who feels as though I have my piano on loan from him, says that keeping the temp and humidity constant is more important. He says that a 'standing' snow is the worst thing for it and it does do out of tune quickly after such an event.

    • Heather says

That would make sense, then, because depending on how well your outer walls are insulated, the humidity and temp could fluctuate a lot. And a heat/air vent would dry things out a lot as well, so I guess the piano stays where it is. :-)

  • MrsF says

Our has taken up the same place in our last two houses – the back wall of our combo living room/dining room, making it one of the first things you see when you come in the house. Our first place had a much smaller wall, so the piano seemed to fit better. I styled it with a large mirror resting on top, family photos and seasonal decor -rather like the top of a buffet.

The piano just arrived in the new house after a year and a half of storage (oops) and it seems dwarfed against the wall. I'm planning to balance it out with dining chairs on either side and a large statement piece of art/gallery of photos. I'd LOVE to do a built in treatment like the grasscloth and mirror example, but don't want to commit to the piano living in one spot forever.

  • Heather Petersen says

My story is exactly the same as yours! I do have a beutiful piano now with the hopes one of my kids will play too. I have found it to be a challenge to decorate around. It is hard to balence the weight of a piano in a room. I can't wait to see how you style yours! No doubt it will look great when your done.

    • momma-lana says

Balancing the weight is exactly what I have always thought too. I have a baby grand and have it balanced with a formidable Broyhill entertainment center that I do realize is out of style now with the new TV's. If I get rid of the entertainment center my piano will be all wrong in the room.

  • Jennifer @ Dimples and Tangles says

Great examples! I squeezed our piano into a corner of our office/playroom. Without reading anything into this comment, it's nice to be able to close the doors while the kids are practicing! :)

    • Emily A. Clark says

I'm trying tot to think about the actual noise yet :) Ours will be smack in the middle of the house. The babies may never sleep soundly again!

  • Sanity Fair says

The way Robeson Int. used the piano as a focal point, almost like a fireplace, is genius. Uprights always seem more awkward in a room than grands or baby grands.

  • Megan says

We are about to inherit a piano and I so badly want to paint it but I have been told to absolutely never paint a piano! I'm nervous about what it will look like in my house as the wood on the piano is a different color than the rest of the decorations in the house, but I'm excited to get it!

  • Nancy says

I got rid of one we inherited and no one played anymore. They are difficult to design around, but that Robeson Design shot is the best Ive ever seen! Best of luck and I hope it brings your family many hours of joy.

We were lucky to inherit the piano my husband took lesson on. Now 3 of our 5 kids take lessons. I am glad you did this post because I am always looking for ways to make it look better. Right now we just have a mirror above and a lamp on top. I've tried putting stuff on top but it starts to look cluttered and that drives me crazy. Can't wait to see what you do! I love all examples you've shown!

  • Sandy says

We have had our piano on the same inside wall for the past twenty-nine years. Our daughter began lessons when she was seven. I have a framed photo of our seven grandchildren, a small clock, a brass lamp, and a vase with autumn sprigs of this and that all positioned nicely on its beautiful pecan top.I was hoping one day my daughter would house her piano, but the time is not right for the safety of the piano verses the three youngsters.

  • Danielle Oakey Interiors says

I will definitely have a piano in my home one day, I feel like it is a must have. I might need to learn how to play though…

  • The Riddle's says

I have an upright piano (and I'm a piano teacher), still trying to figure out what to do with the wall above. Thanks for the post!!

  • [email protected] says

So funny! My father-in-law is a concert level pianist yet my husband doesn't have a musical bone in his body and apparently neither do our kids. We have just recently given up on them after they both announced that we are wasting our money and they hate playing. Sheesh!

  • Joanne says

What timing! I was just pursuing Craig's List earlier today for a piano. I also live in the Charlotte area – can you share what delivery service you used to move the piano?

    • Emily A. Clark says

Hey Joanne, Email me and I'll give you the details. I wasn't able to respond directly to your comment via email. Thanks.

  • Annie @ House on Rene says

Love the examples you chose! Hopefully soon we will be getting our own piano. I am excited because we will have to fit it into a room that houses a library, music room (I am a musician) and home office all in one!

  • heyhomeslice says

How exciting! Good luck with the lessons :)

  • Emily says

Congrats!!!! I LOVE having a piano in my home! I've been playing since first grade. I bought a (non fancy) piano a year after we got married. It was in our bedroom for a while. When we moved to our townhouse, it actually fit under the bar (http://replicatethendeviate.blogspot.com/2012/03/lately.html). My current hope is to one day move out of our townhouse and have a lovely library/piano /office room with french doors right off the entry so I can give piano lessons in my home instead of going to my students' homes. And in the distant future I'd love to have a baby grand in a dining room. :)

I am so excited you are posting on this! I have been trying to decorate around our piano for the past year-can't wait for the updates! -Meredith @http://www.ahighcottonstyle.blogspot.com/

  • Tara G. says

How exciting!! I majored in music, and so yes, we have a piano. But because we're military on the move, I did not want an acoustic one…the military does not hire professional piano movers and if you saw the shape of my dining table after this last move, you'd understand further why it's just not a good idea to move an instrument of that size around so much. Anyway, we bought a Yamaha Clavinova and have enjoyed it a lot. On our first tour in Ukraine, we visited Leipzig, Germany where Bach had his boys' choir (and he is buried there). I found some old sheet music with the German writing and had one of my favorite pieces of his framed- they hang above the piano and remind me of a fun trip. Enjoy the music!!!!

Here's a pin I love with a great painted piano. I have that exact piano–a very old, beat-up but well-beloved version of it. I love the pin but can't imagine actually painting a piano! What would you do in five years with teal just isn't all that anymore??
    http://pinterest.com/pin/233765036877710511/

I use our piano like other people use their fireplace mantels–it's a design focal point of our small front room and I do seasonal displays on it and make banners/buntings to drape across the front of it.

Yes, We have a piano…in our library/home office/ music room. And I am totally inspired by the non-matching piano benches in those pictures. Now I MUST get a different one, maybe that is what I've not liked about ours all these years?!? Thanks again for the inspiration….Baileyhusband on the other hand is probably NOT going to thank you! :) ~Kim

  • Mandy says

It is SO hard to find pictures of piano placement in a home! We have a piano (it's the piano I learned to play on that we strapped to a Uhaul and moved down to Charlotte!) and one thing I have been back and forth on is painting it – I've seen some really pretty examples of painted upright pianos – a teal one really caught my eye, and a black chalkboard painted one… so that's what I've been debating. Can't wait to see how yours turns out! It's a great instrument to have in the home!!

  • Becolorful says

Sometimes you just have to embrace it and let it be front and center. Ours is big and black. No hiding this "baby" instead I hope that it makes us look a bit classier than we really are. :D

We have one since hubs was a professional for so many years…he played keys. Ours is wedged in the corner of the dining room…and even better, he takes the front off bc he likes it big and loud. Not a cute look. I've debated painting it…it's his old upright from childhood. We had our son in lessons for 3 years…it was painful on me (nagging and sitting in the car during lessons), and him (never really liked it). But I think being somewhat musically inclined will be appreciated when he's older. He's in orchestra now for school, and already feel comfortable with music and notes.

Oh, and I'll just keep talking. This little nugget was the best I ever heard…when your kids start whining about wanting to quit…tell them if they can find 3 adults who either a) didn't wish they could play piano, or b) took piano, and are so glad they quit…then you'll let them quit. It's impossible. Everyone wishes they could play!

    And cassie out.

  • cndesigns says

As a pianist and a decorator I deal with the "where to put it…." often ;-) The main thing to remember is: If you really want your children to learn to play and enjoy it, then position it where they'll want to go to practice. People who sequester their piano to a room no one wants to go to, very quickly find the kids won't practice. (I know this from also being a piano teacher.)

I'm lucky in that I have a space in our house that looks as if it was specifically designed to hold our baby grand piano! I have no idea what the builders of the house originally thought should go there, but now it's the perfect "piano salon".

Best of luck with your piano and your family learning to play. Oh and remember to get it tuned, repaired and maintained regularly. Check here for a Registered Piano Technician near you. http://www.ptg.org (My hubby is a Registered Piano Technician so I'm blessed with a piano that's wonderfully maintained too.)

I am so glad you are getting a piano. Now your mom can play for your family when she and your dad visit! I have my piano from my childhood and would love to have it in a room where I could decorate around it, but due to inheriting a great deal of furniture when my parents passed away and the fact that I don't have very many rooms in my house, it sits in my utility room and collects dust. (sigh!) Perhaps someday my husband will let us add on a music room, just for me!!!!

  • Shelley {Crazy Wonderful} says

How fun! I recently inherited my grandmother's piano. Although I don't play, I was the grandchild that was chosen because I was a music major in college (flute). I LOVE having it around! I ended up refinishing it, and it currently resides in our dining room. What a booger finding a spot for it though. Nothing makes me smile (or cringe depending on the time of day, ha!) than hearing my 3 year old daughter walk by and plink around on her great-grandma's piano :)

  • Heather Moore Grahling | Vivid Hue Home says

yah! i can't wait to see it! I grew up with a baby grand and my parents still have it in their house. I played when i was little and always hoped i would inherit it one day…but now have NO IDEA where i would put it in my house…we may literally have to add an addition, ha! it was my great grandmother's piano so would love to keep it in the familly. So excited to see your photos!

Were we separated at birth? I also took piano lessons for years and shed many a tear over the fact. I still can't read music — for practice I would puzzle out each note and memorize the song. Then pretend I could play it at my next lesson. ugh. My grandmother, who recently passed and who was the organist at her church for decades made one last request of me — that I give my girls music lessons. Maybe it skips a generation? :) Excited to see how you'll work your magic with the piano and decor! Now I'm going to follow the link to see where it will go.

  • Cindy Gray says

I finally got a band kid! I don't have any piano players yet. My life's dream was to own a piano. One of the first things I purchased when I got out of college. I have an old jangly spinet piano now. I modpodge concert ticket stubs, programs, stickers, etc to it. I don't know why I never thought about painting it. I just moved, it's still on the moving dolly covered in moving blankets in the corner of my office. I'm getting motivated to unwrap it!

  • Jessica @ Stay at Home-ista says

We also have a piano (my mom's old baby grand) that none of use play! At least it's pretty:) I'm not willing to listen to any of my kids practice, at least not yet, I still have a baby that needs naps!

Hi Emily!!! How are you?? How are those babies? Twins really are the best. So I never tell my kids to stop pounding on the piano..only the most pleasant of sounds are made when my kids put their fingers, hands, heads, toy cars and choo choo trains all over it. My answer is yes get a piano and make it look much better than any of the above pictures that you have posted..especially the one with the green chairs and the antler;-)

    Lots of loves.
